IPAI Free Medical Assistance Scores
Preliminary Success
The Igbere Progressive Association International, Inc. (IPAI) community health
assistance program in Igbere has scored an initial success following a report
sent in by Mr. Chinedu Obike, one of the Monitoring Committee Members.
It will be recalled that during the 2008 Ezumezu Igbere, i.e. on December 26,
2008, a public announcement was made to Igbere people that had gathered at
Igbere Secondary School football field for the Ezumezu events by the IPAI
President Chief Awa, that IPAI members had set aside seven hundred and
twenty thousand naira for medical assistance to Igbere Health Centres for
2009.
This was solely for the benefit of every Igbere sons and daughters and any
person in Igbere that was in need of primary healthcare. To set aside such
amount of money was not easy considering the fact that IPAI is still at the tooting
stage and is barely just about fifteen (15) months in official existence. The
Executive Committee Members were very passionate about it and considered a
lot of factors before deciding to give it a try.
It was seen as a matter of urgency as sickness or death does not give any time
for long preparation or even warning before striking. It is a well known fact that
some minor health issues in Nigeria could be terminal, even though a little
medical attention and medication could have prevented it from being fatal. For
me, no amount of money spent to improve our peoples’ quality of life or save a
life is too much as good health is what everyone desires.
From this report showing that as at today (March 20, 2009) the Health Centres
at Onu Ibina, Umuisi, Okafia and Amaiyi have treated 132, 78, 40 and 40
patients, respectively, is very encouraging. None of us could predict what could
have been the fate of any of these people who have benefited from this
program if no one had attended to them. I am not praying for high number of
sick people in Igbere, however, while we hope for good health for all we must
prepare for the unexpected.
As we continue to support and finance this program I must thank members of
IPAI and the Executive Committee members for contributing their money, ideas
and time for this good course. My special thanks go to the Financial Secretary
Mr. Emeka Ejieke who did the foot work with me in Igbere on January 2 & 3,
2009 during which the initial amount of one hundred and twenty thousand naira
was given out to the health centres (Onu Ibina N60,000.00, Umuisi N20,000.00,
Okafia N20,000.00 and Amaiyi N20,000.00) for the months of January and
February 2009. I am also very grateful to the members of the Board for their
moral support. At least IPAI has touched the lives of 290 people health wise in
Igbere.
My fellow IPAI members, it is normal to hold different views on any issue,
however it is more honorable and fulfilling if our collective action continues to
put smiles on the faces of those in need. May we never relent in our efforts to
support this good work.
Thanks
Chief Michael C. K. Awa, P.E.
