THE SUN-SET OF A GREAT IGBERE SON
COMMODORE AMADI GUY IKWECHEGH (1951 - 2009)
God creates great men and women and Commodore Amadi Guy Ikwechegh was one of those great gifts from
God to Igbere people, Nigeria and Africa as a whole. Born in 1951 and departed November 11, 2009, to be
with the Lord after putting up a great fight against his ill-health. He was a warrior, a Nigerian Navy
Commodore of a great repute. He was highly intelligent, down to earth and above all well rooted in his people’
s culture, showing love and respect to everyone. On many fronts he was first among his equal and a big pair
of “shoes” have been left empty and I pray that God provides us someone to fill these shoes.
To buttress how much the late Commodore A.G Ikwechegh loved his people and identified with us no matter
where the duty called. He did not hesitate to honor the invitation from the newly formed Igbere Progressive
Association International, Inc. (IPAI) to attend the convention (Ezumzu 2007) in Atlanta, Georgia. He
delivered a powerful and thoughtful key note address. Before this time he had served as the Director of
Nigerian Naval Intelligence, Hydrographer of the Nigerian Navy, the Military Governor of old Imo State (now
Abia and Imo), Member of the Nigerian Provisional Supreme Military Council, Naval Commander ECOMOG
forces Liberia, Board Member the Nigerian Maritime Authority and Aguiyi-Owa-Mba of Igbere, etc. In all
these he left positive foot prints on earth. It saddens my heart that God recalled him when we needed him
the most.
My brothers and sisters we must take heart because even though we loved him, God loved him more. Our
comfort must lie in the fact that it is not really how long one lived on earth but the quality of life one lived. Our
brother lived a high quality and result oriented life and has left admirable positive foot prints for us to follow.
In accordance with the words of God in Ecclesiastes chapter 3:1-2 etc. “To everything there is a season. A
time for every purpose under heaven. A time to be born And a time to die, A time to plant And a time to pluck
what is planted etc”. God created and planted and God has plucked and recalled his great son the
Commodore to grant him eternal rest. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Adou Adou the great warrior Adou.
